Bike & Hike Combo
Make the most of your Hauraki Bike Trail experience by exploring the beautiful scenery and
discovering the rich history of the area by foot as well as bike.
Starting from Waihi you will cycle through the stunning Karangahake Gorge taking in the
Victoria Battery, Owharoa falls and Rail Tunnel before being met at Karangahake hall,
where you will park up your bikes, and be shuttled to the start of your 5km hike at Dickey
Flat. The largely flat walk follows the Waitawheta River along old tramways, (with plenty of
swim hole opportunities) passing over beautiful swing bridges and through 2 sets of tunnels
(Torch recommended!), the second tunnel you pass through is part of the famous windows
walk with stunning views out into the gorge.
Once you return to your bikes you will continue your ride along the trail to the town of
Paeroa- world famous for its giant L & P bottle, antique shops and river port history.
At this point you can take a well earned rest for the night.
On your second day you can take your time cycling between the towns of Paeroa and Te
Aroha through open Dairy farmland and with views of the iconic Mount Te Aroha.
On reaching Te Aroha, you will be met by our team and taken to Waiorongamai Valley where
you will be able to walk the low-level route (5km) following the Waiorongomai stream (again
with swim hole opportunities) returning back along the tramway. There are a range of
opportunities to extend your walk, if so desired, including taking in the challenging Butlers
incline route.
On completion of your walk you will be returned to Te Aroha (via a delicious real fruit ice
cream stop if desired) where you can stay the night and take a hot mineral spa and enjoy the
many bars and eateries the town has to offer.
