Ride the full Coast-to-Coast Hauraki Rail Trail, from the calm shores of the Hauraki Gulf to the surf beaches of the Pacific Ocean. This iconic journey showcases the region’s most diverse landscapes—coastline, wetlands, farmland, gorges, and historic towns.
Begin in Kaiaua on the Firth of Thames, cycling along the coast past the Pukorokoro Miranda Shorebird Centre and through mangrove-lined paths to Thames, the gateway to the Coromandel. Enjoy a well-earned rest with excellent accommodation and dining options.
After Thames the trail takes you away from the coast through classic Waikato dairy farms
with views of the Coromandel Ranges to the town of Paeroa, world famous for its giant L & P bottle, antique shops and river port history. Overnight here or continue to Waihi through the spectacular Karangahake Gorge, rich in gold-mining history and scenic highlights.
Finish with a short shuttle to Waihi Beach, the perfect place to relax, unwind, and celebrate your coast-to-coast achievement.

The Whole Hauraki Journey

The full self guided tour of the Hauraki Rail Trail. Following historic rail lines, this journey is suitable for all fitness levels and delivers some of the North Island’s most iconic scenery, attractions, and food stops—without steep climbs or technical riding.
The full Hauraki experience takes you from coastal wetlands to rolling Waikato farmland, through the spectacular Karangahake Gorge, past historic gold-mining sites, hot mineral spas, and finally to Matamata—home of Hobbiton. With regular refreshment stops, short daily distances, and luggage transfers included, this is an achievable and rewarding multi-day ride.
We recommend 5 days / 4 nights to fully enjoy the sights, activities, and relaxed pace but are happy to tailor it for everyones individual needs.
